Aflați cumFycompa (perampanel) has been used for over 10 years to treat partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. While it has been approved by the EMA since 2012, it is not yet fully available everywhere across Europe.
If you're an epilepsy patient in Poland, unable to access Fycompa in local pharmacies, here's what your options are.
What is Fycompa used for?
Fycompa is an epilepsy medicine used as an add-on therapy to other anti-epileptic treatments. It treats partial seizures (starting in one part of the brain), including those that spread to the whole brain, in patients aged 4 and older. It also treats primary generalised tonic-clonic seizures (affecting most or all of the brain) in patients aged 7 and older when the cause of epilepsy is unknown. Its active ingredient is perampanel 1.
How does Fycompa work?
Fycompa's active ingredient, perampanel, is an anti-epileptic medicine. Epilepsy results from excessive electrical activity in the brain. While its exact mechanism is not fully understood, Fycompa is believed to block the neurotransmitter glutamate, which plays a key role in nerve cell communication. As the main excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate can trigger and sustain seizures. By blocking its action, Fycompa may help prevent epileptic seizures 1.
How long does it take for Fycompa to start working?
Fycompa starts working from the first dose. However, if your doctor needs to increase your dose, based on your specific situation, this is usually done at weekly intervals. If that's your case, it may take a few weeks to see the full effect of the treatment 2.
Is Fycompa addictive?
It can be, if not used properly. It's important to always follow your doctor's prescription to avoid unwanted effects of the treatment 3.
Is Fycompa available in Poland?
Fycompa (perampanel) has been approved for use in the European Union (including Poland) since 2012. It's registered in Poland, meaning that doctors can prescribe it to patients.
However, the medicine is not widely available in Poland. That's why in 2022, the Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System (AOTMiT) published a statement allowing for reimbursement of Fycompa when imported from abroad for personal use 4. This process is also known as Named Patient Import.
